We have reached “Crossover,” the halfway point of the 2025 General Assembly Session. This is when all the bills that passed in one chamber (the Senator or the House) have to crossover and be voted on in the other.

Our staff has been working hard to advocate for justice, both in supportive and defensive efforts. Some of our legislative priorities are still moving forward, but even for the bills that are not, we saw some historic progress made this session.

For many years, we have advocated for enabling localities to implement anti-rent gouging measures. For the first time ever, the House Bill (HB 2175) reported out of committee and made it to the House Floor. Even though it did not pass on the floor, we received more votes in support of this bill than ever before.

HB 1980, a bill that creates heat illness prevention standards for workers in high-hazard industries, passed the House for the first time and is waiting to be considered in the Senate.

The process of the General Assembly is a marathon, not a sprint; it can take many years to get something passed, but every year is an important opportunity to add new supporters and move it closer to the finish line.

We have also been working to prevent harmful bills from becoming law. Our teams successfully opposed a number of anti-immigrant bills introduced in this session, defeating proposed bills that would expand who can access protected youth records, eliminate transfer hearings for youth potentially prosecuted in circuit court, and bring back presumptions against bail

There is still much to do before the session ends on February 22nd, including finalizing the budget that will be sent to the Governor’s office. Stay tuned for more updates, including on our social media channels, as our bills continue to move through the General Assembly process.
