Tell Your State Senator and Delegate: Virginia Renters Can’t Wait – Remove Delays on Tenant Protections
The Virginia General Assembly passed important bills to protect renters. But the Senate added unnecessary delays to critical protections, meaning they would not take effect this July like other bills. These delays mean renters will keep suffering in unsafe homes and facing landlord retaliation for months longer.
Thankfully, the Governor amended these bills to make them effective July 1, 2026. However, if the Senate rejects her amendments, tenants across Virginia will have to wait until January of 2027 to get the benefit of these new protections. We can’t wait. Housing problems are happening right now. Renters need these protections NOW.
What you can do: Contact your State Senator and Delegate NOW and urge them to ACCEPT Governor Spanberger’s amendments to these important tenant protection bills.
The bills being delayed:
- HB 329 (Delegate McClure) which would strengthen our right to organize to improve our quality of life without fear that our landlords will retaliate against us.
- HB 281 (Delegate Callsen) and HB 848 (Delegate Cousins) which would help us hold landlords accountable when they don’t maintain safe and healthy housing.
- HB 834 (Delegate McClure) which would increase tenants’ rights in the case of fire or other severe damage to their homes.
