Statement in Response to Governor Vetoing HB650/ SB351

On Tuesday, the Governor vetoed HB 650 and SB 351, prohibiting certain federal civil immigration arrests in courthouses, schools, state hospitals and near polling places without a judicial warrant.

When community members are brave and speak up to name a problem, we look to our leaders to take bold action to address those concerns. We are disappointed that the Governor vetoed HB 650 and SB 351 and replaced the bills with Executive Order 16. The Executive Order is no replacement for the robust protections offered in these bills. This decision undermines due process protections for some of the most vulnerable families across Virginia.

Virginians deserve better. We are so thankful for the zealous advocacy from community leaders and partner organizations across the Commonwealth, urging the Governor to sign these important bills. Though this is not the outcome we were pushing for, the courage of community leaders and partners remains an inspiration to us all.
