On Tuesday, August 1st, we invited community members and partners into our Petersburg office for an Open House! We were thrilled to have so many old and new faces in our Sycamore St. office.

The Legal Aid Justice Center has served the Petersburg and southside area since 2001 when we merged with Southside Virginia Legal Services, which had been providing legal services there for more than four decades. In 2013, due to budget cuts, the Petersburg and Richmond offices were merged, and our combined Richmond/Petersburg staff continued to serve Petersburg residents through part-time office hours and remote appointments. In an effort to rebuild, LAJC began hiring dedicated staff for the Petersburg location in April 2021.

We are now thrilled to report that we have two full-time Petersburg staff: organizer Christopher Rashad Greene and attorney Lauren King, along with administrative help from staff who are split between our Richmond and Petersburg offices. It is wonderful to be able to provide more support to the Petersburg community, and we are already working hard for a number of clients.

Over the past year, we’ve also helped with the creation of Petersburg Voices Speak Out (PVSO), a local community group dedicated to addressing issues of housing insecurity and civic engagement.

Anyone in the Petersburg area looking to receive legal assistance can call our office at (804) 862-2205 or visit our office at 237 N Sycamore St, Suite A, during walk-in hours on Tuesdays from 9am to 4pm. More information on what we can and can’t help with can be found here.
