LEGAL AID JUSTICE CENTER’S MARY BAUER TO STEP DOWN;
ORGANIZATION SEEKS NEW EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR

Charlottesville, Va., April 27, 2018 —
Legal Aid Justice Center (LAJC) Executive Director Mary Bauer has announced plans to step down as Executive Director in mid-summer 2018.  Bauer became Executive Director in January of 2014.  LAJC’s Board of Directors will immediately launch a national search for its next Executive Director.

“I can’t say enough about Mary’s leadership of LAJC,” said Jonathan Blank, Board Chair and partner at McGuire Woods.  “We were a strong organization when Mary stepped into this role, but, in the last four and half years, LAJC has become one of the most relevant and effective non-profits in Virginia.  We look forward to welcoming a strong leader to carry on LAJC’s mission.

In addition to putting the organization on a more stable financial footing, Bauer’s legacy includes launching LAJC’s Civil Rights and Racial Justice Program (CRRJ) and implementing campaign style strategic planning within each of LAJC’s programs: JustChildren, Immigrant Advocacy, Economic Justice, and CRRJ.

“It’s been an enormous honor to lead this organization and this amazing team of advocates,” said Mary Bauer.  “LAJC is a strong, vibrant organization, and I have no doubt it will continue to do amazing work for many decades.  It is bittersweet to leave this wonderful organization, but the decision is the right one for my family right now.  I expect to stay in Charlottesville and to continue to support LAJC in whatever way I can.

“Mary is as fearless, tireless, and selfless as any leader you’ll meet. We are enormously proud to have worked under her,” said Litigation and Advocacy Director Angela Ciolfi.  “Her rock solid moral compass and strategic vision have been an inspiration to all of us on staff.  Mary was exactly the leader we needed at this moment in our history.  She’s put LAJC on the right path to go forward and fight for justice.”
