Police Accountability

Through partnerships with groups like the People’s Coalition and the Richmond Transparency & Accountability Project (RTAP), LAJC works in deep relationship with Virginia communities to strengthen community power over-policing and end police misconduct.

Our police accountability initiatives seek to equip communities with the tools to have a say in how their neighborhoods are policed, address officer misconduct on individual and systemic levels, and make budgetary recommendations. We continue to fight to increase public access to policing data [or and advocate for meaningful civilian oversight of police departments. After years of public pressure, Charlottesville’s Civilian Review Board met for the first time in June 2020 and the Richmond City Council unanimously voted to begin gathering community input to establish civilian oversight in July 2020.
