Caroline McCance

Caroline is thrilled to work for Legal Aid Justice Center as a Senior Litigation Attorney. Caroline comes to Legal Aid Justice Center having worked as an attorney with Equal Justice Under Law, a Washington D.C.-based civil rights organization focused on the decriminalization of poverty. During her time at Equal Justice Under Law, Caroline worked on numerous cases seeking abolition of pretrial supervision fees, unjust driver’s license revocations, and unconstitutional bail schedules. Caroline spearheaded new cases challenging damaging child-support requirements for indigent parents of children in foster care, and fighting illogical booking fees for re-arrested probationers.

Caroline began her career as a staff attorney for AIDS Action Committee in Boston, MA. During her time with AAC, Caroline represented low-income individuals living with HIV/AIDS in civil legal services matters involving housing, public benefits, discrimination, medical privacy, and domestic violence.

Caroline graduated from the University of Richmond School of Law in 2019. During law school, Caroline interned with the Boston-based organization Lawyers for Civil Rights, The Department of Education’s Office for Civil Rights, the ACLU of Virginia, and the Hon John A Gibney, Jr. in the United States District Court for the Eastern District of Virginia. Caroline served as the President and a founding member of Richmond Law’s chapter of If/When/How: Lawyering for Reproductive Justice, and volunteered with the Virginia Equality Bar Association at their name and gender marker change clinics.

When she is not at work, Caroline loves cooking for friends, crafting, yoga, water sports, exploring the outdoors, and the Boston Red Sox.
