Welcome Hayden and Chelsea

Please join us in welcoming two exciting additions to the Legal Aid Justice Center team: Hayden Sloan, Director of Development, and Chelsea Dunn Torrey, Youth Justice Program Director.

Hayden Sloan (they/them) is our new Director of Development based in the Charlottesville office. Hayden brings 25+ years of management and fundraising experience and most recently served as the first Director of Advancement at the National Radio Astronomy Observatory. There, they built a fundraising program from the ground up and brought in significant new resources to support STEM education programming.

As LAJC’s new Director of Development, nothing is more inspiring and heartwarming to Hayden than joining forces with like-minded people who put their values into action by financially supporting LAJC’s work to fight for those most vulnerable among us.

Outside of work, Hayden enjoys time with family and friends—and their two pugs.

Chelsea Dunn Torrey (she/her) is our new Youth Justice Program Director and is also based out of Charlottesville. Chelsea comes to us from Southern Legal Counsel, where she served as Legal Director and spearheaded litigation and partnerships to decriminalize homelessness and poverty, protect underserved children in the legal system, and represent persons with disabilities and within special education.

As Director of the Youth Justice Program, Chelsea is excited to lead and support LAJC’s efforts to ensure that youth in Virginia receive an equitable and high-quality education, have access to appropriate community-based services, and avoid criminal legal systems involvement.

In her free time, Chelsea enjoys hiking and cooking with her husband and two little boys.

We are thrilled and grateful to have strong leaders like Chelsea and Hayden by our side as we continue to advocate for justice and equity across Virginia. Thank you for helping us welcome them into the LAJC community.
