Carlos Bernate
Carlos is a Colombian-born photographer, videographer, writer, and communications strategist whose work uplifts stories of identity, equity, and community resilience. A graduate of Universidad Jorge Tadeo Lozano in Bogotá with a degree in Photography & Film, Carlos has spent more than a decade creating multimedia narratives that amplify underrepresented voices and grassroots movements. Their photography and video work have appeared internationally in outlets such as The New York Times, The Atlantic, and Politico, and have been exhibited across the United States, Colombia, Argentina, and Portugal.
Carlos’s storytelling has been recognized with back-to-back honors from American Photography (AI-AP) and multiple awards from the Virginia Press Association. Alongside their creative practice, Carlos has led strategic communications for nonprofit organizations, building campaigns that advance racial justice, immigration rights, reproductive health, and economic equity.
Since making Richmond home in 2017, Carlos has remained dedicated to documenting and supporting the struggles and strength of their local community, with a commitment to authenticity, dignity, and justice.
