Just in the past year, we permanently repealed Virginia’s driver’s license suspension for court debt scheme, secured an injunction slashing the number of immigrants detained by ICE at the largest detention center in the Mid-Atlantic and passed a law giving Virginia oversight authority, won the nation’s first COVID-specific, statewide, and enforceable workplace safety standards, passed legislation enabling communities to set up civilian oversight for law enforcement, and decriminalized school-based disorderly conduct, which was a leading contributor to the school-to-prison pipeline, especially for Black students.

Founded in 1967, LAJC provides services under four key program areas: Civil Rights & Racial Justice, Economic Justice, Youth Justice, and Immigrant Advocacy. About the position:

Legal Aid Justice Center seeks a Legal Assistant. Legal assistants play an essential role in the day-to-day operations of LAJC. The Legal Assistant communicates with clients in Spanish and English, conducts intake, helps with case management, document preparation and translation, maintains calendars, organizes files, maintains the lobby, and other administrative tasks as assigned. The legal assistant position is conducted in person, 8:30 am-5:00 pm, Monday-Friday, with the potential for one remote workday weekly after onboarding is complete.

Job Duties:

  • Establish and maintain expertise in the experience of community members at LAJC from start to finish.
  • Act as a Spanish language interpreter including client appointments and accurate translation of legal materials.
  • Conduct timely intake and other administrative functions through a race equity and social justice lens.
  • Schedule and confirm appointments, respond to phone messages, provide referrals, and conduct client intake.
  • Proactively expedite intake procedures and provide backup coverage for other admin positions. 
  • Conduct legal research.
  • Locate and develop relevant case information and prepare documents for review by attorneys.
  • Monitor compliance with deadlines.
  • Prepare documents for review by attorneys.
  • Organize and maintain the lobby and front desk.
  • Provide accurate fast-paced data entry and file maintenance.
  • Provide administrative duties as assigned.

Required Qualifications:

  • Strong commitment to social, economic, and racial justice
  • 3+ years as a legal assistant or closely related customer service experience in a law office or similar setting.
  • Spanish fluency.
  • Proficient in MS Office applications, including Word, Excel, Teams, and Outlook.
  • Ability to learn and effectively utilize case management systems, research sites, and other legal software.
  • Analytical thinker with excellent conceptual and research skills.
  • Demonstrated organizational skills and meticulous attention to detail.
  • Ability to work under pressure and meet deadlines.
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Legal Assistant or Paralegal certification.
  • Experience in Spanish/English translation in a law office or similar setting.
  • Notary Public.
  • Proficient in Westlaw and other legal research sites.


This role will be based in our Charlottesville office. Although a regular presence in the office is required, LAJC offers a remote work policy to support employees in co-creating schedules and arrangements that allow us all to do our best work.

The salary band is $50,000 to $65,000. Placement on the range will be based primarily on years of relevant experience and the anticipated hiring range is between the beginning to the middle of the range.
