In 2014, 10,504 children were confined in juvenile detention centers in Virginia—the majority of them for nonviolent offenses. Incarceration is a traumatic event that exposes kids to high levels of violence and abuse, and rarely results in a positive outcome for the child or the community. Last year alone, Legal Aid helped 11 youth avoid a collective 52 years in the system, saving the state approximately $1.2 million dollars.
Arrested Youth will provide a glimpse into the juvenile justice system, highlight the work of Legal Aid in the Richmond area, and feature experts who will discuss better ways to invest in the future of Virginia’s children.
- Emcee: Jennifer McClellan – Virginia House of Delegates
- Keynote: Dahlia Lithwick – Supreme Court Correspondent, Slate
